Bucking the Des trend.

Like that post Jim and plenty of home truths.

What I find particularly nauseating is the speakers all have their startup mantra, the one key secret which ensured their success. As a startup, you must become a disciple of the speakers mantra or face ruin, starvation and public flogging for the rest of your miserable existence.

The delivred mantra is packaged in easily consumed, bite sized chunks of wisdom - "tell stories", "engage your customers" etc etc.

If you were to take on board all these chesnuts over the course of, say, a one day summit and add them all up into a strategy you would end up pretty much running around trying to do everything conceivable. Which is what you are already doing ... because you are a startup. So, congratulations, you already have a strategy plan that encompasses all the wisdom of all the startup gurus doing the circuit.

Relax, you're on the road to success.

Hi Jim,

Just came across this comparison of yours between Grails vs Django in GAE. Great article. Wanted to know if you'd like to feature it on getcomparisons.com? A project we’ve started to house all the best product comparisons on the web under one roof. You can back-link to this original article of course. Check it out, and if you're interested, I will send you an invite.

Cheers,
Akshay Arabolu, Founder

This blog is attracting Des's! There is a place for these enterprise start sessions (early stage and idea generation), but the contributors cannot lose sight of staying energised. It reminds me somewhat of another Des!! Des Bishop the comedian, he is continually refreshing his material, a joke heard the first time, funny, second time, amusing, third time, I can't listen to this guy anymore.. Therefore Mr Bishop keeps it fresh, suppose he has to, or else he will not earn a living. You have to question who is paying these entrepreneurs (for want of a better description) to show up and roll out the same hat...

From my limited experience, if you're smart enough to run a successful startup your probably smart enough to not need these events. Most of the advice is common sense, if you have a specific question you can likely get some good responses though.

People think they can short circuit the hard work by finding out some silver bullet at these events.

I agree with you Jim... having been to a few of these confs/events I attended one of the DWS events about a year ago... pretty much ALL of the presentations had the same old 3/4/5 bullet points about how to succeed with a startup... and for the most part, nothing that you can't grab from any 2 bit self help, wanna-be Entrepreneur book... It is difficult to get any real valuable nuggets.

Also, difficult to take some of the info when it comes from guys who had a one-hit followed by many flops... and often the "hit" was let's face it down to a lot of luck during times when money was being thrown at anything with a website!

A wanna-be :-)

My two cents: the latest web summit was not very engrossing, the stories were the same and there was not much insight to be garnered, especially if you've been to a previous summit. The boot camp in the morning had some interesting pieces of information though a few speakers spent a little too much time plugging their products instead of talking about their experiences and giving out advice.

Hi Des,

I like Contrast's stuff. Glad to hear that you agree to some degree aswell but it moves to serious diminishing returns after a summit or two and I don't really see the value in it anymore. Cheers for the link, will check it out.

I left the Dublin Web Summit after I spoke to get back to it. In this case "it" was a client project that funds our development time on things like Exceptional.

I think when you're starting out there is value in hearing a few of the regular circuit talks, but it definitely diminishes. In addition, I think Ireland is somewhat lacking in recent web start-ups, we can't live off the successes of Stockbyte, Hostelworld and Daft forever. So there is definitely value in heading abroad to catch a talk or two.

A great post along the lines of what you said was is this one http://blog.amirkhella.com/2011/02/23/what-i-wish-someone-had-told-me-5-years-ago/
Key quote: "I no longer confuse going to entrepreneurship events with being an entrepreneur."

Hope my talk didn't bore ya too much
